The Argentine
Alienists before Onofroff the Illusionist (1895)
Between March and june 1895 an
italian-born illusionist called Onofroff stayed in Buenos Aires. During those
three months, he gave several shows in two important theaters of the city, and
performed his experiences before leading members of the press, medicine and
culture of the city. His mind reading and fascination experiences produced immediate
reactions from the members of the local cultural elites. The purpose of this
paper is to analyze how the Buenos Aires' alienists reacted to the phenomena
produced by onofroff. To this end, various articles and columns published by
those professionals mostly in the press are discussed throughout this paper. I
will try to show that the physicians took different positions regarding the
facts in question. The medical discussions revolved mostly around the danger of
hypnotism, and the credibility that science should provide to events that could
not be fully explained, such as thought transmission.
Key words: Onofroff
- Hypnosis - Ramos Mejía – Illusionism.
