Temperaments and Styles in
Reading
The aim of this work was to
study the possible correlation between temperamental traits and reading habits
in law students. Hock’s temperaments test and preference reading test of the
university of Veracruz were used. In this population sample the
prevalence of women with phlegmatic temperament was present. When a comparison
was made between the scores of the various temperaments in proof reading
preferences, statistically significant differences were observed. Individuals
with choleric temperament had no specific distinctive differences with others,
but the melancholic and phlegmatic groups departed from the sanguine. In the
case of people with phlegmatic temperament it was highlighted the fact that in
a greater percentage they considered not to have the habit (p < .05), and that
they preferred reading used books (p < .05). The melancholic temperament population
referred to have had, in the age range of further reading, a smaller percentage
than the other groups in the young adult age (p< .05). The sanguine group
differed more when compared with all other groups. It had a clear positive
difference with the other groups in the fact that they never read political
magazines (p < .05). They considered that they read more from the ages of 18
to 25 years (p < .05). They read for friends (p < .05), listen to radio
for entertainment more than the others (p < .05), and watch television to
learn (p < .05). We conclude that the temperament test used allows us to
differentiate relevant items weighted by the chosen scale of reading habits,
and that, therefore there are temperamental traits that influence reading
habits.
Key words: Temperament – Reading – Trait – Habit.
